" STARTUP MANAGER "
Using StartUp Manager ( Works great with Win98, see below. ) The Tabs StartUp Manager contains 9 tabs. Six
of these tabs are used for the Registry settings. The
first four tabs are used for: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE Color coded indicators. There are two color indicators to
help you quickly recognize which tabs contain settings.
Red - indicator before the tab name, means that this tab
contains one or more enabled items. Dark gray - indicator
before the tab name, means that this tab contains one or
more disabled items. No indicators, means that there are
no items in that tab. Saving changes to settings. Changes
to contents of tabs are saved automatically by pressing
"OK" button, closing the program window or
switching to another tab. Running Programs at Start-Up To launch an application automatically at start-up under Windows 3.0, you had to insert a Run or Load command into WIN.INI. Windows 3.1 simplified this process with a Program Manager group called StartUp. Windows 95 contains a similar Startup folder that houses shortcuts (C:\Windows\Start Menu\ Programs\Startup) and is also backward-compatible with .INI files. In addition to these two methods, the Registry contains at least six additional keys that can load programs at start-up. The system automatically runs them at start-up. Four of these (Run, RunOnce, RunServices, and RunServicesOnce) reside in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion, and two (Run and RunOnce) are under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion. As their names suggest, both RunOnce keys and the RunServicesOnce key are run only one time; they are run the next time Windows reboots, and then the system removes their contents from the Registry. The other keys are run each time you start up. The Run and RunOnce keys in HKLM contain applications that must be loaded and exited before any other programs are run. Such applications include install programs that reboot the machine and finish a setup before your normal collection of programs is launched. When a program is launched from the Run or RunOnce keys in HKCU, it is restored to the state it held before the last shutdown. When such a program is notified of a shutdown, it stores its loaded files and other present parameters in these two keys. The RunServices and RunServicesOnce keys load programs before the login prompt appears. Keys under HKLM run for all users on a given machine, while keys under HKCU are user-specific. Requirements Microsoft Windows 95. ( I use Startup Manager in Win98 with no problems. Startup Manager enables one to delete Registry keys that MSconfig in Win98 will not allow you to do. R. C. W. ) Some knowledge of the Windows 95 Registry would be helpful. Uninstall This program can be uninstalled from the Control Panel. Note: Before you proceed with uninstallation, enable any disabled settings that you would like to keep or they will be lost with StartUp Manager. This software and all associated
